Breezes, Sunshine, Waves and Sand: Poetry from the Beach

Earlier this month my husband and I had a short but lovely vacation in Florida with some of his siblings. The sun, the waves, the sand, the breezes that were both mild and strong, the blue sky and white clouds – all worked together to bring refreshment and reduce stress.

Weekly Haiku Challenge

The prompt words chosen for Ronovan Writes #weeklyhaikuchallenge are Breeze & Blow. How fitting for some haiku about the beach!

Sand beneath my feet

Water rushing to and fro

Constant breezes blow
                                                                                                                                         gayl wright

We took walks on the beach, the soft sand making a cushion beneath our feet. Wading along the edge we let the water come over our feet, then felt the sand pulling away as the water receded.

Breezes

A beautiful day
Clouds blow by and waves roll in
Soft breeze cools my face

                                                                                                      ~ gayl wright

On the beach I sit
Breezes blow in from the sea
Sand gets in my hair

                                                                                                ~ gayl wright

On our last day, even though the winds were strong we braved them anyway and walked along the beach. Click To Tweet

Inspiration and Refreshment

My sister-in-law and her husband decided to sit down for awhile. She was the inspiration for the last haiku, as she found sand in her hair upon returning to the condo.

I hope you were able to relax and find a bit of refreshment here through the poems and photos. The beach can be a nice place to relax or exercise. Maybe I like it so much because it is different from what I see every day.Sometimes a change of scenery can work wonders to lift our spirits. Friends Are People Who Love You No Matter What Happens

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24 NIV)

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
(John 15:13 NIV)

friends

Friend is the Five Minute Friday word for this week. True friends are gifts and sometimes rare in this day and age. Jesus is the perfect example of a true friend. Click To TweetHe made the ultimate sacrifice by giving His life for you and me. That kind of love is immeasurable.

Most of us will not be asked to give our lives for our friends, but often we may make sacrifices to help them. We might bring a meal to a family who has been sick. Maybe we offer to babysit to give parents a needed date night.

There are many ways to show friendship. Click To Tweet One of the most important ways is just to be there for someone else. Sometimes we don’t even have to talk. Just the presence of another person who loves and cares can do wonders to lift the spirits of another.

Showing love and listening are also things that good friends do. A friend is someone we can count on no matter what happens.

(John15:9-15)

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Stress: A Hindrance to a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful Life

My life is busy, and I’m sure yours is, too. Many of us don’t take enough time to rest and relax during the day. We just want to do one more thing, write one more page, clean one more area in our home, finish the blog post, finish editing the photograph, and the list goes on causing stress.

Sometimes I’m up really late at night trying to get a blog post just right. Maybe I’ve had trouble getting the photographs to upload, or formatting, or whatever it is, and I think I HAVE to finish before I go to bed. So I push myself and sometimes don’t finish until after midnight.

Why do I find it so hard to stop? Do you run into that problem?

Work cannot take all of our time. Life is meant to be enjoyed. We need to focus on what is at hand. When we are always thinking about the next thing, we aren’t really in the moment. Instead, we are stressing about whatever else we have lined up for the day. We don't need to be continually rushing from one thing to another. Click To Tweet

Our bodies need adequate rest and relaxation. Most of us suffer from too much stress, and I think part of that is because we don’t slow down. We don’t stop and notice the small things. It is important to find ways to eliminate stress in order to enjoy life and be healthy.

Health and Well-Being

Recently a good friend of ours had heart bypass surgery. Just last week he had a heart catheterization and blockages were found in several arteries. And suddenly he needed surgery. I’m sure that was not something he had in his plans, but he’s glad it was found in time to do something about it. He’s doing well, by the way.

That got me thinking about my own health and well-being. Click To TweetAt my latest doctor appointment I had a mostly good report. My blood pressure was a little high, but she did not seem overly concerned. However, the lower number, which is the resting heartbeat, was much higher than it should be.

With the recent surgery of my friend, and knowing that years ago my dad had the same thing, it was a wake up call for me. I immediately did some research to find natural ways to lower that diastolic pressure. Click To Tweet Turns out there are some simple things I can do to make a difference within a short period of time. I am already putting some of them into practice. One recommendation is to find ways to relieve stress.

Relieving Stress with Poetry

Earlier yesterday I spent time with the online Magnetic Poetry kit to write a poem and wanted to publish it last night. But I didn’t have a blog post to go with it. I almost pushed myself to finish last night. But I took my own advice and decided to set it aside until I had time today. Click To Tweet Believe it or not that took off some stress. There were only bits of time today to work on it, but I kept at it when I could and finally finished after supper. Here’s the poem. I hope you enjoy it!

A Beautiful Life

Listen to intuition
Rest and relax

Feel gentle breezes
Breathe deeply

Climb a tree
Let your soul blossom

Love always
Live a beautiful life

May we always be full of love and look for ways to encourage ourselves and others, looking to God for strength to become who we are meant to be. May we follow our dreams and use our talents to make the world a better place. Click To Tweet

Hearts Full of Love Will Overflow

The photo for this week’s Twittering Tales is an interesting one. Kat has a knack for picking photos that can have many interpretations. In case you are not familiar, Kat Myrman picks a photo prompt each Tuesday. The challenge is to write a story inspired by the photo using only 140 characters or less. Click To Tweet Hearts with arrows tend to turn thoughts toward love. Consequently, each of my tales involve love in some way.

The Joy of Love

Each anniversary Joe drew a giant heart in the sand for Liz.
She always acted surprised which made him very happy.
It was the joy of love.

An Unusual Artist

An unusual artist, Sid used the sand as his canvas.
Hearing the waves crash inspired him as he created
the heart, a token of love for Sasha.

For my last one I tried writing it several different ways and finally ended up with these two below. I wasn’t sure which one to use so both are featured. Which do you like better, the first or the second?

Hearts of Love

Matt and May met late in life, an unlikely pair to fall in love.
In the sand he drew a heart and nervously proposed.
She nodded with a smile.

A Beach Vacation

My husband, Steve, and I are planning a trip to a beach in Florida in the near future. We’ll be renting a place for a week with his younger sister and her husband. Right about now, after all the sickness and busyness the beach sounds inviting.

My computer is staying home, and I will take a short break from blogging. Click To TweetMind you, I’ll still be writing, just not with my computer. A few of my art supplies will be coming with me, along with books to read and a couple of journals for recording thoughts. You can be sure I will continue to write poems, take photographs and be on the lookout for blogging material.

I do plan to use my phone for checking email, Facebook and reading a few blogs, but only for a short time each day.

Time to Reconnect with God and Each Other

This vacation is a perfect opportunity to take walks along the beach, to talk about dreams and goals and to celebrate each other. This vacation is a perfect opportunity to take walks along the beach, to talk about dreams and goals… Click To TweetWe used to pray together regularly and also spend time reading the Bible and other books together, but we’ve let other things interfere. Without all the normal distractions of home, a vacation is a perfect time to begin again.

Turning Our Hearts To God

In turning our hearts to God, thinking about His great love for us, I am reminded of the following passage from I John 4.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.
(I John 4:7-12 NKJV)

I pray that we will let our minds dwell on the truth of God's great love for us. Click To Tweet May our hearts be filled with love for our Lord and others, beginning right in our own homes. Then together we can reach out to others with a true love that will continue to ripple out into the world.
