Believe: Not in Yourself but in God

Everyone needs to believe in something. To go life alone is pretty much impossible. There is a popular saying that tells us if we just believe in ourselves, anything is possible.

As my art journal page below shows, I do believe that we can have desires and wishes that might seem impossible. I don’t believe we can just make a wish and expect impossible things to happen. But I do know that with God nothing is impossible.

Believe in God

To rely only on myself to make sense of life or of my calling does not get me very far. But there is someone else I can believe in who gives meaning to life. Jesus came to earth to demonstrate His love by dying for us, even though we were sinners.

Romans 5:8 (CSB)

But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus came to be a light in this dark world. When I believe in Him I am no longer in darkness. He gives me life and direction. [bctt tweet=”As I read the Bible I learn how to live with love and have peace. ” username=”GaylWright”]

This is what Jesus said:

John 12:46  (CSB)

I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me would not remain in darkness.

On my own I can only go so far, but if I trust in Jesus, who is all powerful, I can accomplish much more. He gives me strength to follow His leading. Because I have confidence in Him, I can reach for my dreams. I can meet new people, make room for silence and contemplation, share the goodness of God with all I meet.

Using the talents and strengths He has given me, I can leave creative echoes and encourage people along the way. Whatever life brings, I can have peace and know that God will give me the strength to keep going. In fact, each of us who know the Lord can be encouragers in this world.

Philippians 4:13 (CSB)

I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.

  1. Gayl, you hit on the vital difference between trusting our lives to God and being self-sufficient. He can plant His own dreams in our hearts and fully equip us for all we face and need to accomplish. My hope and prayer is for these words to be true in my own experience: “Using the talents and strengths He has given me, I can leave creative echoes and encourage people along the way.” Amen! May we all seek to leave footprints of God’s presence with us and share the way His grace makes all the difference in our lives. xoxo

    1. Joy, I see those words being true in your experience. Your creative poems and words and photos inspire so many, including me! Yes, His grace does make all the difference. Blessings, love and hugs to you, dear sister! xoxo

  2. Gayl – WOW – I love you are doing Write31 – I am in a moment of writers block, so I am glad I didn’t commit to do 31 days. This is so fun to read. and Yes, believing in yourself isn’t enough – we must believe and trust in God too! Because we can only go so far all by ourselves

    1. I almost didn’t do it, Debbie. I really didn’t decide until the first day! God was nudging me and where I thought I didn’t have any ideas for it, He assured me I did. So I know He has a purpose and I just need to follow. Blessings to you! Thanks so much for your encouragement! xo

  3. Dear Gayl, I love these thoughts that bring our thoughts back to believing in God! I love these “creative echoes” that you are sharing with us. Especially as my oneword for this year has been sufficient, I have been seeing so many ways in which the Lord is reminding me that leaning into Him, and not my own strength is so much better! I am so thankful that God is helping you share this series with us! Love and Hugs to you! xoxo

    1. Dear Bettie, You are such an encouragement to me! Your prayers mean a lot. I, too, am learning more and more how to lean on the Lord for my strength. I still try to do it on my own sometimes, but it’s much better to trust God to lead. You are one reason I am able to share this series, because of your prayers and advice and example. Blessings, love and hugs to you, dear poet/sister/friend! xoxo

  4. I love the idea of creative echoes! I love your posters and the creativity you’re showing there and the message they bring! I love being reminded that we can make our wishes and all things are possible with Him! And I love that we don’t and can’t do it ourselves but with him we can!

  5. I love the art on your blog posts! So true! We should never thing God will answer all our prayers yes, it’s so true! We believe in God and His powers, but not that he will always say Yes.

  6. That collage with that little girl is adorable and so inspiring, Gayl. Such truth in what you share here. Believing in God lifts the shame in our struggles and helps us to discover who He has created us to be, in Him.

    1. I’m so glad you were inspired, dear Anna! Yes, God does help us to be who He has created us to be. 🙂 Blessings, hugs and love to you, dear sister! xoxo
